When is the school in session?

The Renaissance Preparatory academy is a year round school. The four quarter approach was chosen based on research that noted the relapse of knowledge that occurs when students have longer times off such as a full 3 months in summer. The year round calendar of 10 weeks on and 3 weeks off also provided 40 weeks of instruction and the goal was to exceed the minimum requirements so that children have the most opportunity to continue learning in an organic fashion much like they will as adults... year round!

Some additional pragmatic reasons also influenced the decision. A private school is one that parent pay for directly; thus, some families will need both parents working and a year round school provides them with the opportunity to take vacations in other times of the year than summer and to allow for extended family to care for the children without getting burnt out (i.e. grandparents watching kids for 3 weeks instead of 3 months at a time).
An additional plus was that it allow us to have more holidays off than a traditional school calendar. This was nice because it allows us to have 2 major holidays off to respect the major religions of the U. S. and the world. We did, I admit, do the same thing that the federal government did a while back and at times "observed" the holiday at the closest Monday or Friday to allow for 3 day weekends!

Here are the four quarters that will will have in an on going basis. This first year, our summer term and fall interim session are flip-flopped to allow for a traditional school start. However going forward, this is the general pattern that we expect. This provides 90,500 instructional minutes (78,240 minutes due to the flip-flopping of the term and intersession.) Make-up days are not scheduled since, even on the short schedule, we have about 10 more school days than is required.

Summer

Picture
Our school year normally starts in Summer. This is so the student who takes advantage of the full calendar year to learn the materials will still finish the grade before the Fall and will have an easier time transferring to a different school year if they move.
We usually have 48 days or 23,040 instructional minutes during the summer term which in the future will begin the Monday after the Fourth of July and go to the second week in September. Children who are 5 years old by 10 days past the start of the term are welcome into our PrePrimary class. Holidays typically observed during the summer term are: Muslim Holiday: Eid Ul-Adha, and the U. S. Holiday: Labor Day
After the Summer Term is usually the Fall Intersession. This is usually two weeks long and usually includes the Hindu Holiday: Navarati ending. The third week is taken during Thanksgiving week so that the whole week is off from school.

FALL or AUTUMN

Picture
The Fall or Autumn term begins the first week in October and runs until the middle of December. It has 48 days as well with its 23, 040 instructional minutes. Children who are 5-years old by 10 days past the start of the term are welcome in PrePrimary class. It includes 8 holiday days. Holidays typically observed during the Fall term are: Jewish Holiday: Succot ending,  the U. S. Holiday: Columbus Day, the U. S. Holiday Veterans Day, and the five days of Thanksgiving week (U. S. Holiday).
After the Fall Term is the Winter Intersession. This is from the middle of December to the first part of January. It has 11 days. Holidays typically include Christian Holiday: Christmas; an end of the year School Holiday; and the U. S. holiday of New Year's Day.
